It was a day full of “WOWs” during Matt and Jamie’s wedding celebration…their gorgeous ceremony was at Dimnent Chapel at Hope College, followed by a fun boat ride on their family’s Sea Ray out to Lake Michigan, and an awesome reception at Boatwerks Restaurant. The whole day was phenomenal and fun, and we had a great time taking in some of the best that Holland Michigan has to offer. Congratulations and best wishes to you both!

PostHeaderIcon Windmill Island Wedding

We survived the July heat and photographed the awesome wedding of Kyle and Tonya. It was hot. It was like Africa hot. Did I mention it was hot? After beginning our day at Windmill Island, we took a trip out to Lake Michigan for some beach photos. I don’t know if Tunnel Park has ever been that busy, they were turning people away at the gate. But y’know, when you have a bride and groom with you, you can pretty much do anything! Oh yeah, they let us in. Next we went to the Curragh with the bridal party and then back to Windmill Island for the wedding and reception. Tonya and Kyle were troopers and dealt with the heat amazingly well with style and grace. What a great day!

It was truly a magical day at Maggie and Philip’s beautiful wedding celebration on Lake Michigan at Michillinda Lodge in Whitehall. Joyfulness and excitement were definitely in the air! One minute there were tears and the next would be laughter, and sometimes both at the same time. We are grateful to have witnessed such a wonderful couple in love celebrating their new life together as one.

PostHeaderIcon Livonia MI Wedding at Laurel Manor

We traveled to the east side of the state to cover Gary & Ann-Marie’s wedding in Livonia on Saturday. The weather said 70% chance of rain, but instead it was hot and muggy and tons of sunshine. What do those weather guys know? We had a blast hanging out with Gary & Ann-Marie and sharing their wedding day with them. The wedding day coverage went from the hotel to Ann-Marie’s mother’s home, then to Hines Park and finally to Laurel Manor where both the ceremony and reception took place. Awesome couple, awesome wedding, awesome time!

PostHeaderIcon Bonbon Visits The Studio

My sister Bonnie and her husband Chris came up to visit us from Goshen, IN, the land of the Amish. We had a great time downtown Holland eating lunch at the New Holland Brewery and then doing some shopping on 8th street. After we came back to our house, Julie wanted to create some photos in the studio. But what that really means is that she wanted ME to create some photos in the studio of her and Bonnie.

So we had a little bit of fun and took some photos. I think the camera has the same effect as a sugar buzz on Bonnie, because as soon as we started she was jumping around and getting a little crazy. It was awesome!

After we had a good laugh watching a slideshow of the images we grilled a few steaks and went to Tunnel Park to watch the sunset. Then off to Captain Sundae and back home for a bonfire. What a great day!

PostHeaderIcon Mike Rowe Visits Holland Michigan

Last night, Julie and I were photographing Doug & Kate’s engagement session downtown Holland. It was rather hot, and especially humid, so when we were done with our session we all decided to go to the New Holland Brewery for a beer.

As we were waiting to be seated I looked over to my left and noticed a guy sitting with a big group of people. He was wearing his baseball cap and not drawing any attention really. I did a double take: wait, is that Mike Rowe? Needing a second opinion not believing that Mike Rowe was in Holland, I asked Kate, “Do you know who Mike Rowe is?”

“Of course!”

“Is that him sitting over there facing us?”

“Well, if that’s not him, it’s his twin!”

After we were seated our giddy waitress confirmed that it was indeed Mike Rowe. Turns out she was a huge fan of Mike’s, and was too nervous to even talk to him. We told her we’d take her photo with him if she wanted. I think all of us wanted to get a photo! Our plan was to wait until he was finished eating and then see if he’d oblige us.

The four of us made our move. Whenever you’re in a situation like this, it really helps to have two good looking women with you! Mike was very friendly. I told him that “the Deadliest Catch was my favorite show. Dirty Jobs? Eh, not so much.” He thought that was funny. He told us that he shot a cow in the face and butchered it for a segment on an upcoming Dirty Jobs episode.

“So you slaughtered a cow and then came to the brewery for a burger?”

“Er, no, that wouldn’t be right. I think I had the Treehugger.”

“Is this your first time to Holland?”

“Yeah, I think so. Michigan’s been really good to me.”

“We did see the Mackinaw Island episode.”

“I’ve been in Detroit a lot, y’know for the Ford commercials.”

We got our photos and talked for a couple minutes before going back to our table. I can only imagine what Mike was thinking when we first walked into the brewery carrying all of that camera equipment.

“Holy crap! Is that Mike Rowe over there?”

“Aw crap! It’s the papparazzi over there.”

What a great night it was! Creating engagement photos, great company, great conversation, and we get to meet a really cool celebrity.

I love my “job!”
